Jupiter

The largest planet in the solar system is Jupiter. Jupiter was named after the ruler of the ancient Roman Gods. Jupiter has 40 moons that orbit it self. Most of them are very small. Jupiter has four large moons in fact the large moons might be considered as planets because they orbit the sun and not Jupiter.

The four large moons are very different from each other. Fiery Io has many active volcanoes. Europa has a shell of formed water ice and a smooth surface. Callisto, on the other hand, has many craters. Its surface is very ancient.  Ganymede, the solar system's largest moon, is bigger than the planet Mercury. Scientists think that Europa, Callisto, and Ganymede may have water beneath their surfaces.

The length of Jupiter's atmosphere is similar to the suns. It is mostly hydrogen with some helium. With a diameter of about 143,000 kilometres Jupiter is so huge that it could contain more than 1,000 Earths. Its great mass gives the planet a strong pull. Its gravity is much greater than the Earth's. The average temperature on Jupiter is -148șc. Jupiter has 63 satellites and 4 rings. The surface on Jupiter has hot balls of gas and liquid. The size of Jupiter is 11 times the diameter of the earth.
